Houston Texans' Toro District Project Raises Concerns Over Taxpayer Costs
The Houston Texans, led by Chair and CEO Cal McNair, announced plans to relocate their headquarters and training facilities to the new Toro District in Bridgeland, Texas. This 83-acre mixed-use sports and entertainment destination is being developed in collaboration with real estate developer Howard Hughes and Harris County officials. However, the project has sparked concerns over the financial burden on taxpayers. Investigations have revealed that the development involves hundreds of millions in taxpayer money, with county officials expressing worries about escalating costs. Emails obtained by ABC13 show that the Texans sought to minimize property taxes and proposed the creation of a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) to fund infrastructure, raising questions about the project's financial implications.
