Freshwater Reservoir Discovered Beneath Utah's Great Salt Lake

Scientists from the University of Utah have discovered a vast reservoir of freshwater beneath the Great Salt Lake, one of the saltiest lakes in the United States. Using airborne electromagnetic surveys and magnetic data inversion, researchers mapped the subsurface and found fresh water extending more than three kilometers underground in certain areas. The discovery includes pressurized freshwater pushing through the lakebed, forming reed mounds known as 'phragmites oases.' The lake itself has shrunk by approximately 70% since 1989 due to upstream diversions and climate change, exposing 800 square miles of lakebed. This has led to significant dust issues, with toxic metals being carried into nearby cities like Salt Lake City. The Utah Department of Natural Resources and the Great Salt Lake Commissioner’s Office are funding groundwater studies to address these environmental challenges.
