President Trump's TikTok Strategy Leverages Pop Star Backlash for Political Content
President Trump's administration has adopted a strategy of using pop stars' music in politically charged TikTok videos, often leading to objections from the artists themselves. This approach, as seen with Ariana Grande's song 'We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)' in a video about transgender athletes, appears to intentionally provoke a reaction. Grande publicly commented, 'Never use my music again. Again.' Other artists, including Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Katy Perry, have also objected to the use of their music by the Trump administration or campaign. An administration official reportedly stated that such posts are made with the expectation that news organizations will amplify the dispute, effectively turning the artists' disapproval into additional content and extending the news cycle. This strategy is described as a 'punk rock' approach to social media politics, where the forbidden nature of the song makes its use more impactful.
