McKinsey Faces Long Road to Rebuild Reputation After South Africa Scandals
McKinsey & Co. is working to restore its reputation in South Africa following its involvement in state corruption scandals. The consulting firm was implicated in a series of graft cases, known locally as state capture, which also involved other major companies. McKinsey has taken steps to address the fallout, including firing implicated staff and working pro bono on global business meetings related to South Africa's hosting of Group of 20 gatherings. Despite these efforts, the company continues to face criticism and has not resumed bidding for government work. McKinsey's managing partner for Africa, Gregor Theisen, emphasized that rebuilding trust will be a lengthy process. The firm has also paid significant sums to resolve criminal allegations in the U.S. and has reimbursed fees to South African state-owned enterprises.
