Study Finds Filtered Coffee Linked to Slower Biological Aging Compared to Instant Coffee
A recent study published in npj Science of Food has found a potential link between the type of coffee consumed and the rate of biological aging. The research analyzed data from 49,414 adults in the UK Biobank, focusing on the consumption of filtered versus instant coffee. Results indicated that individuals who regularly drank filtered coffee had longer telomeres and lower biological age scores, suggesting a slower aging process. Conversely, those who consumed instant coffee showed shorter telomeres and higher biological age scores, indicating faster aging. The study highlighted that the association was particularly strong among men, individuals aged 60 and older, and current smokers who drank more than three cups of instant coffee daily. Researchers also identified certain substances, such as GlycA and cystatin C, that might explain the relationship between coffee type and aging. However, the study is observational and cannot definitively prove causation.
