German Health Insurers Warn Against Expanding Coverage for GLP-1 Receptor Agonists
In Germany, health insurers are expressing concerns over proposals to expand coverage for GLP-1 receptor agonists under the statutory health insurance system. Sonja Optendrenk, the new chair of the Joint Federal Committee, suggested that the government could direct the committee to determine which patient groups should receive these medications, which are currently used for treating Type-2 diabetes. Anne-Kathrin Klemm, a board member of the BKK Dachverband, emphasized that these medications, including Semaglutid and Tirzapatid, are already popular and costly. The potential expansion to include weight regulation could significantly increase expenses for the health insurance system. Klemm advocates for a comprehensive approach that includes prevention and lifestyle changes alongside medication.
