Pediatrician Group Warns Against Raw Milk Consumption, Citing Serious Infection Risks and Lack of Health Benefits
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued an updated policy statement warning against the consumption of unpasteurized (raw) milk and milk products. The AAP emphasizes that raw dairy poses serious infection risks, particularly for children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding individuals, and states that claims of superior health benefits for raw milk lack scientific support. The organization highlights that pasteurized milk offers equivalent health benefits without the added risk of infection. Raw milk can harbor virulent pathogens such as Listeria, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Brucella, and Escherichia coli. From 2013 to 2018, 75 outbreaks linked to unpasteurized milk products resulted in 675 illnesses, 98 hospitalizations, and two deaths, with nearly half of those affected being under 20 years old.
