Chile's Atacama Desert Faces Environmental Crisis from 60,000 Tonnes of Discarded Clothing
In Chile's Atacama Desert, a massive accumulation of discarded clothing has become a stark symbol of the global fast fashion crisis. Over 60,000 tonnes of second-hand garments, primarily from Europe, the United States, Canada, and parts of Asia, are shipped annually to Chile through the port of Iquique. While many of these clothes are sorted and resold across Latin America, a significant portion remains unsold and is abandoned in the desert. This has resulted in a growing textile waste site, visible from space, which includes a variety of garments such as jackets, shoes, and children's wear. The environmental impact is exacerbated by the illegal burning of synthetic textiles, which releases hazardous compounds into the air.
