Phoenix Experiences Record-Breaking Overnight Heat Amidst Extreme Weather Conditions
Phoenix is enduring extreme heat, with the National Weather Service reporting record-breaking overnight lows. Since May, the city has set 10 new records for overnight temperatures, with the latest being 97 degrees, the hottest ever recorded. Historically, Phoenix averaged seven nights per year with lows at or above 90 degrees, but recent years have seen over 20 such nights annually. This year alone, there have been 11 nights with temperatures at or above 90 degrees. Climate scientists attribute the rapid warming of nighttime temperatures to human-caused carbon pollution and urban development, which trap heat close to the ground. This trend is not isolated to Phoenix; summer nights across the U.S. have warmed by about 3 degrees since the 1970s, with Phoenix experiencing a 6.5-degree increase.
