Croatia Airlines A220 Aborts Take-Off at Split, Resulting in Runway Excursion
A Croatia Airlines Airbus A220-300 experienced a runway excursion during an aborted take-off at Split airport. The incident occurred on May 16, 2026, as the aircraft was preparing to depart for Frankfurt. During the take-off roll on runway 23, the aircraft veered to the left, causing one of its landing gear wheels to leave the asphalt and run onto the grass. The Croatian air accident investigation agency AIN has classified the event as 'serious' and has initiated an inquiry. Although the reason for the aborted take-off has not been clarified, social media videos suggest that reverse thrust was engaged, leading to the left-hand engine striking a runway signboard. The aircraft, delivered less than a year ago as part of Croatia Airlines' fleet modernization, was carrying 130 passengers and five crew members, none of whom were injured. The aircraft is currently awaiting inspection at Split airport.
