Appeals Court Flags AI-Generated Fake Cases in San Antonio ISD Lawsuit, Highlighting Risks of AI in Legal Field
A recent case involving the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) has brought to light the risks associated with the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the legal profession. A Miami attorney, representing a student's mother in a lawsuit against SAISD, cited four cases in an appeal that Justice Lori Valenzuela of the 4th Court of Appeals identified as likely AI-generated 'hallucinations.' This incident underscores a growing concern among legal professionals regarding the reliability of AI tools. Mason Clark, an assistant professor of law at St. Mary’s University School of Law, noted that while AI use is expanding, mistakes are common, and AI can make false information appear credible. A survey by the State Bar of Texas indicates a significant increase in AI adoption among Texas attorneys, rising from 30% in 2024 to 62% this year, further emphasizing the need for caution and verification when utilizing these technologies in legal proceedings.
