Advancements in Mitochondrial Engineering Enhance Therapeutic Potential
Researchers at Hokkaido University have developed a new method to enhance the delivery and stability of mitochondria into living cells, potentially advancing organelle-based therapeutics. This approach involves coating isolated mitochondria with a protective polyethylene glycol (PEG) layer, which preserves their structure and facilitates the attachment of cell-penetrating peptides (CPP). This innovation, termed 'e-MITO', improves mitochondrial uptake by cells and maintains their energy-producing function. The study, published in Advanced Materials Interfaces, demonstrates that cells with these engineered mitochondria show increased respiratory activity, suggesting potential applications in treating mitochondrial disorders.
