OpenAI Announces Cybersecurity Measures to Protect 2026 Midterm Elections
OpenAI has announced a comprehensive plan to enhance cybersecurity and protect the integrity of the 2026 midterm elections in the United States. The initiative focuses on combating the misuse of artificial intelligence, particularly in the form of deepfakes and election interference. OpenAI's strategy includes five key components: disseminating reliable voting information, bolstering cybersecurity, watermarking deepfakes, enforcing policies against election interference, and eliminating political bias in its AI models. The company has made its Codex Security agentic framework and Trusted Access for Cyber framework available to election officials and is actively briefing the National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors on these tools. Additionally, OpenAI has partnered with the Associated Press to share election data, further supporting the dissemination of accurate information.
