Macy's Removes Iconic Shopping Bag Sign, Revealing Historic Building
Macy's has removed its iconic giant shopping bag sign from its Herald Square location in New York City, revealing a 100-year-old building that had been obscured for decades. The sign, which had been a fixture on the corner of 34th Street and Broadway for 60 years, was taken down as part of efforts to modernize the space. The removal of the sign exposes a five-story building known as the 'Million Dollar Corner,' a historic real estate holdout. The building was originally acquired by Henry Siegel, a rival department store owner, who outbid Macy's to hold the corner plot. Macy's had leased billboard space on the building's facade since the 1920s. The decision to remove the sign follows a legal dispute in 2021, where Macy's sued Kaufman Realty, the building's owner, over concerns that a competitor might advertise on the billboard.
