US State Department Makes Visa Bond Program Permanent, Excludes India from List
The U.S. State Department has announced the permanent implementation of its visa bond program, initially introduced as a pilot scheme. This program is designed to mitigate visa overstays by requiring certain applicants for U.S. visitor visas to post a bond of up to $20,000. The program currently applies to citizens from 50 countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, but notably excludes India. The regulation is set to take effect on August 3, following its publication in the Federal Register. The program targets applicants for B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourism) visas, with consular officers having the discretion to determine the bond amount. The State Department's review of the pilot program concluded that visa bonds effectively encouraged compliance with visa terms.
