Discovery of Brain Lymphatic Network Offers New Pathways for Treating Neurodegenerative Diseases
Scientists have discovered a hidden lymphatic network in the brain, solving a long-standing mystery in brain anatomy. This network, identified as 'arachnoid fenestrations,' allows cerebrospinal fluid to drain from the brain into the lymphatic system. The study, led by researchers at the Institute for Basic Science in South Korea, highlights the role of these structures in clearing metabolic waste from the brain, which is crucial for preventing the accumulation of toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. The research shows that these structures deteriorate with age, potentially contributing to the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.
