Challenges in Training AI on Africa's Diverse Languages
Developers across Africa face significant challenges in training AI to understand and respond to the continent's diverse languages, which number between 1,500 and 3,000. The lack of written resources for many of these languages complicates the development of language models. Initiatives like the African Next Voices project are working to create data sets by recording and transcribing languages in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. However, only 42 African languages are currently supported by language models, highlighting a gap in AI accessibility.
