Children Bypass Age Verification Systems Using Simple Tricks, Raising Concerns Over Effectiveness
Children are finding ways to bypass online age verification systems, often using simple tricks such as drawing fake mustaches with cosmetic pencils to confuse AI-based verification tools. According to a survey by the UK non-profit Internet Matters, half of the children surveyed found it very easy to circumvent age restrictions. This issue arises as age verification laws are being implemented worldwide, requiring users to upload identification documents to third-party companies. Critics argue that these databases are vulnerable to hacking and pose a threat to internet freedom. Major tech companies like Apple, Reddit, and Meta have introduced updates and methods to comply with these regulations, but the effectiveness of these measures is being questioned.
