Florida Insurance Regulators Report Decrease in Home Insurance Premiums Amid Legal Reforms
The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation has announced a decrease in home insurance premiums across 51 counties, attributing the reduction to legislative reforms aimed at curbing frivolous lawsuits. Since 2024, 44 insurance companies have requested rate decreases, while 48 have requested no increase, stabilizing insurance costs. The reforms, passed in 2022, eliminated one-way attorney fees, which previously incentivized homeowners to file lawsuits, thereby increasing legal costs for insurers. Mark Friedlander from the Insurance Information Institute noted that fewer lawsuits have led to reduced expenses for insurers, resulting in savings for consumers. Additionally, reinsurance costs, which constitute a significant portion of premiums, are also falling, further contributing to the decrease in insurance costs.
