Genetic Links to Borderline Personality Disorder Uncovered in Major Study
A large-scale genome-wide association study has identified 11 genomic loci and 9 candidate genes associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The study, involving data from 13,000 affected individuals and over 1.1 million controls, reveals that common genetic variants account for 17.3% of BPD's liability. The findings show significant genetic overlaps with other psychiatric conditions like PTSD, depression, and ADHD, as well as physical health issues such as COPD and diabetes. This research provides a biological foundation for understanding BPD and highlights the disorder's polygenic nature.
