Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar Joins Bipartisan Call for Protection of Christian Woman in Pakistan
U.S. Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) is among 11 members of Congress who have urged the Pakistani government to ensure the safety and well-being of an 18-year-old Christian woman, Neha Faqir, who was allegedly abducted and forcibly converted to Islam. The lawmakers sent a letter to Pakistan's Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, expressing serious concerns over the legal procedures following Faqir's disappearance and subsequent court appearance. Faqir disappeared on March 24 after leaving her family's home to attend a sewing course and was later traced to an Islamic seminary where she was reportedly forced to convert. Her family disputes the conversion's validity, stating she never expressed an intention to change her religion. The Lahore High Court dismissed the family's petition for her return, and the family was not allowed to speak with her during court proceedings.
