Justice Conservation Fund Supports Tribal Forest Preservation to Combat Logging
The Justice Conservation Fund has initiated efforts to protect U.S. forests from industrial logging, particularly in the southern states. This initiative, led by Dogwood Alliance and New Alpha Community Development Corporation, focuses on investing in community and tribal-owned forests. The fund aims to counteract the negative impacts of the biomass wood pellet industry, which has been linked to environmental degradation and health issues in under-resourced communities. The fund's first grant was awarded to the Tribal Forest of the Lower Eastern Cherokee Nation of South Carolina, enabling the purchase of additional forest land for conservation and cultural tourism.
