Phoenix Experiences Dust Storm and Heavy Rain; Hot Weekend Ahead
Phoenix witnessed a dramatic weather event on the night of August 19, as multiple storm outflows combined to create a widespread haboob followed by clusters of thunderstorms. Winds reached speeds of up to 68 mph, and nearly 3,000 lightning strikes were recorded in a 3.5-hour period. Rainfall totals exceeded 1 inch in several areas, including Mesa, Guadalupe, and Tempe. Over 31,000 households lost power at the peak of the storm. While conditions have calmed, air quality remains a concern due to lingering dust and ozone pollution.
