Bridgeport's East End Explores MLK Corridor Designation for Economic Revitalization
Bridgeport's East End is actively exploring the potential benefits of its designation as a Martin Luther King Jr. Corridor, a state program aimed at stimulating economic development and investment. Stratford Avenue, a primary thoroughfare in the East End, was named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the 1970s. Now, local urban planners and community leaders, including Kelvin Ayala of LBU & Associates, are working to leverage this state designation to attract resources and attention to the neighborhood. The East End is one of seven such corridors in Connecticut, which can give grant applications additional weight. Discussions include creating a pocket park, redeveloping vacant properties, connecting residents to jobs, and providing technical assistance for businesses. The city is also considering converting Stratford Avenue to two-way traffic to enhance accessibility and commerce.
