Vitamin D Overdose in UK Children Leads to Severe Health Risks
A recent incident in the UK has highlighted the dangers of vitamin D overdose, particularly in children. A young boy was initially feared to have a brain tumor due to symptoms such as lethargy, rapid weight loss, and excessive thirst. However, it was discovered that he had been poisoned by an overdose of vitamin D, prescribed for growing pains. The vitamin D3 drops he received were seven times more concentrated than intended, sourced from defective batches distributed across the UK. This overdose resulted in acute kidney injury, and experts warned that the child could have died if he had completed the prescribed course. Another child in Sheffield was similarly affected, with elevated calcium levels and impaired kidney function due to vitamin D intoxication. These cases underscore the risks associated with incorrect dosing and manufacturing errors in vitamin D supplements.
