Suno Loses Landmark AI Copyright Case to GEMA, Faces Licensing Requirements
The Munich Regional Court has ruled against Suno, a generative music platform, in a lawsuit filed by GEMA, the German music collection society. The court found Suno in breach of copyright laws for using GEMA's repertoire to train its AI systems without proper licensing. This decision mandates AI companies to pay for licenses when using copyrighted material for model training and output generation. GEMA's victory follows a similar case against OpenAI, reinforcing the need for a legal framework addressing AI's use of copyrighted content.
