Lack of Standardized Data Hinders U.S. Electrical Grid Modernization Efforts
The modernization of the U.S. electrical grid is being significantly hampered by a pervasive lack of standardized, high-quality data regarding its physical infrastructure. According to experts, the U.S. energy sector receives near-failing grades, often attributed to insufficient investment and aging assets. However, the core issue is the fragmented and inconsistent data that makes the grid difficult to operate, upgrade, and explain to regulators and the public. Different utilities, and even departments within the same utility, capture varying attributes of grid infrastructure in diverse formats and at different stages of an asset's lifecycle. This results in a 'patchwork of partial truths' rather than a coherent, authoritative description of the physical reality of the grid. This deficiency was particularly evident during disaster recovery efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricanes Maria and Fiona, where inaccurate or inconsistent damage classifications led to misallocated resources and hindered recovery.
