Flossmoor's 'Time Machine' Engages Students with Local Veterans' Histories
Flossmoor Veterans Memorial Inc. has developed an educational program called the 'Time Machine' to engage students with the history of local veterans. This initiative, now in its second year, involves seventh and eighth graders from Infant Jesus of Prague School and Parker Junior High. The program, which began in October 2024, is a weeklong curriculum that combines historical research with personal storytelling. Students learn about the service and sacrifices of community veterans through primary sources, photographs, and personal histories. The program has been recognized with the Illinois State Historical Society's 2025 'Best of Illinois History' award for its innovative approach to public and educational programming. Students participate in activities such as researching veteran tributes, interviewing family members, and creating projects that reflect their vision for a future Veterans Memorial.
