Social Media Self-Diagnosis of Mental Health Conditions Raises Concerns Among Professionals
The increasing prevalence of social media platforms, particularly TikTok, has led to a rise in self-diagnosis of mental health conditions and neurodivergence. Individuals are reportedly identifying with conditions like anxiety, depression, autism, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) based on content shared by 'TikTok doctors' or wellness influencers. This trend is fueled by the oversimplification of complex mental health struggles into short, easily digestible videos. While some content creators may have medical backgrounds, a significant portion do not, and even those with credentials can present information in a way that leads to misidentification of symptoms. This phenomenon is creating a culture where serious mental health issues are perceived as trends or less severe, potentially trivializing the experiences of those with genuine diagnoses.
