South Florida Women Transform Invasive Pythons into Luxury Handbags for Conservation
In South Florida, a unique initiative is turning an ecological problem into a fashion solution. Professional python hunter Amy Siewe, known as the 'Python Huntress,' collaborates with Gretchen Maull Berger, owner of the South Florida business GG Maull, to create luxury handbags from the skins of invasive Burmese pythons. Siewe, who has caught approximately 800 pythons in less than eight years, provides the skins, which are then transformed into multi-functional handbags by GG Maull. This female-founded company, with a factory in New Jersey, handles the design and manufacturing processes. The project aims to address the severe environmental impact of pythons in the Everglades, where they are responsible for consuming up to 98% of mammals in certain areas. The collaboration highlights a women-led effort in conservation and sustainable fashion, giving new purpose to a discarded resource.
