Chilean Regulator Flags Safety Concerns at Teck's Quebrada Blanca Mine
Chilean authorities have raised significant safety concerns regarding Teck Resources Limited's Quebrada Blanca copper mine. In August, a large crack and leaks were identified at the mine's tailings dam, prompting workers to request an investigation by the mining regulator, Sernageomin. The issues were initially reported between late July and early August, with workers expressing fears over potential safety risks. Despite these concerns, Teck has maintained that the dam is stable and safe, asserting that the issues were promptly addressed. The company has been sending weekly monitoring reports to Sernageomin and has conducted drills for structural collapse scenarios. The mine has faced operational challenges since 2024, leading to a reduction in production guidance.
