Governor McMaster Appoints Darline Graham to U.S. Senate Following Lindsey Graham's Death
Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina has appointed Darline Graham to the U.S. Senate following the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. Darline Graham was sworn in by Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley on July 14. This appointment is temporary, but Graham is running for a full term in the upcoming election. Historically, many appointed senators have sought to retain their seats through elections, with a significant number succeeding. Since 1990, 17 out of 27 appointed senators who ran for election have won. Darline Graham's appointment continues a tradition of family members filling Senate vacancies, a practice that has been common in U.S. political history.
