CAL FIRE Conducts Controlled Burn on Angel Island, Visible Smoke in Bay Area
CAL FIRE, in collaboration with Marin County Fire and the California State Parks service, is conducting a controlled burn on Angel Island, California, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The operation aims to reduce hazardous vegetation and enhance wildfire resilience and habitat restoration. Crews are targeting 260 acres on the island, with the burn expected to continue until 6 p.m. local time. Favorable weather and fuel conditions have allowed firefighters to safely manage the operation, which has resulted in visible plumes of smoke over the Bay Area, including San Francisco. While the park and campgrounds remain open, access to trails and roads near the burn areas has been temporarily restricted. CAL FIRE has confirmed that the burn is progressing as planned and meeting its objectives.
