Record Typhus Cases in LA County Prompt Health Advisory
Los Angeles County has recorded a record number of flea-borne typhus cases, with 220 cases reported in 2025, marking a 17% increase from the previous year. Health officials have issued warnings about the disease, which often requires hospitalization, with 90% of infected individuals needing medical care. The outbreaks were localized in areas such as Central Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Willowbrook. Typhus is spread by fleas found on stray animals and wildlife, and exposure often occurs in homes when infected fleas are carried indoors. The resurgence of typhus has been linked to conditions such as homeless encampments and areas with accumulated trash, which attract rats.
