Angola's Lobito Corridor Rail Operations Halted Due to Severe Flooding
The Lobito Atlantic Railway in Angola has suspended its operations indefinitely after heavy rains caused nearby rivers to overflow, leading to significant flooding. The flooding affected bridges over the Halo River between Cubal and Caimbambo stations, as well as a bridge over the Cavaco River near Benguela. This railway is crucial for transporting critical minerals such as copper and cobalt from the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Lobito port on the Atlantic coast. The railway also facilitates the movement of sulphur, agricultural commodities, and industrial products in the opposite direction. The Lobito Atlantic Railway, operated by a consortium including Trafigura, Mota-Engil, and Vecturis SA, was granted a 30-year concession in 2022 to manage this vital transport link.
