Permitting Challenges Threaten Broadband Expansion Under $42 Billion BEAD Program
The telecom industry is facing significant challenges in broadband permitting, which could delay projects funded by the $42 billion BEAD program. Industry leaders from Brightspeed, Ziply Fiber, and CentraCom have highlighted issues such as inconsistent timelines, excessive costs, and complex regulations on public and federal lands. These challenges are causing delays and cancellations of broadband deployment projects. The BEAD program aims to inject $21 billion into broadband deployment, with providers given four years to complete their builds. However, permitting issues are impeding progress, risking the completion of projects funded by the 2021 American Rescue Plan.
