Mobile City Leaders Advance Multiple Waterfront Development Projects
Mobile city leaders are moving forward with several waterfront development projects aimed at increasing public access and revitalizing the city's shoreline. These initiatives include a feasibility study for a public marina, the Brookley by the Bay park project, and ongoing planning for the River Walk Plaza mixed-use development. The Mobile City Council recently approved a nearly $49,000 study to assess potential sites, costs, and environmental conditions for a public marina or docking facility. Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis emphasized the goal of allowing recreational boaters to coexist with the city's industrial port. Councilman Ben Reynolds expressed support for the marina study but raised concerns about the city's use of a purchase order instead of a traditional contract for professional services. The Brookley by the Bay project, a 98-acre waterfront park, has secured $14 million in funding for its first phase, with construction anticipated to begin after state agreement and an early 2028 opening.
