Thunderstorms and Sinkhole Cause Major Delays at LaGuardia Airport
A sinkhole near Runway 4/22 at LaGuardia Airport in New York City has forced the closure of the runway, leading to significant travel disruptions. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey discovered the sinkhole during a routine inspection at 11:00 a.m. on May 20, 2026. Emergency crews are working to repair the damage, but the situation is compounded by thunderstorms forecasted for later in the day. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has slowed flights into the airport due to the combined impact of the sinkhole and adverse weather. According to FlightAware, approximately 17% of flights at LaGuardia have been canceled, with nearly 200 additional flights delayed. Delta Air Lines, the largest carrier at the airport, has implemented a weather waiver for affected passengers.
