New York Attorney General Warns of Gold Bar Scam Targeting Seniors, Resulting in $100 Million Loss
New York's Attorney General, Letitia James, has issued a warning about a sophisticated scam targeting older adults, which has resulted in over $100 million in losses over the past two years. The scam involves victims receiving fake pop-up messages claiming their computer or financial accounts have been compromised. Victims are then instructed to call a number, where scammers gain remote access to their computers and financial information. The victims are misled into believing their accounts are at risk and are advised to withdraw their money to purchase gold bars or coins, which are then collected by couriers posing as law enforcement. This scam is not limited to New York, with similar cases reported in Hawaii, Maine, Washington DC, and Wisconsin. In one instance, an 85-year-old man in DC was targeted, but the scam was thwarted when a gold dealer recognized the fraud and alerted authorities.
