Deer Overpopulation in Connecticut Increases Tick-Borne Disease Risk
In Connecticut, the overabundance of deer is contributing to an increased risk of tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis. Deer serve as primary hosts for ticks, facilitating their reproduction and spread. Studies have shown that reducing deer populations can significantly decrease tick abundance and the incidence of tick-borne diseases. For instance, a reduction in deer population in Bridgeport, Connecticut, led to a 92% decrease in nymphal ticks. The presence of the lone star tick, which can cause ehrlichiosis and red meat allergies, has also been documented in the state. The correlation between deer density and tick-borne disease prevalence underscores the need for effective deer management strategies.
