Eaton Fire Cause Identified: Southern California Edison Tower Sparks Catastrophic Blaze
The Eaton fire, which ignited on January 7, 2025, devastated Altadena, California, during a catastrophic week of wildfires in Los Angeles. Officials have determined that the fire originated from an inactive transmission tower owned by Southern California Edison. The blaze killed 19 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, contributing to a total death toll of 31 across the region. The Eaton fire, alongside the Pacific Palisades fire, marked one of the deadliest wildfire disasters in California's history, second only to the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise. Reconstruction efforts are ongoing, with many homes still damaged by smoke and residents struggling to return safely. The fires caused an estimated $164 billion in property and other losses, according to officials.
