Florida Attorney General Sues Netflix Over Data Collection and Children's Privacy Claims
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, alleging that the streaming company misled subscribers regarding its data collection practices for advertising and utilized design features to increase children's screen time. The lawsuit, filed in the 7th Judicial Circuit in St. Johns County, claims Netflix violated Florida law by assuring customers it would not collect, track, or sell personal information for advertising purposes. Despite these assurances, the complaint states that Netflix was simultaneously building the infrastructure for an advertising platform, which launched in November 2022. Furthermore, the state alleges that Netflix employs features specifically designed to keep children engaged on the platform for longer periods, prioritizing profit over consumer protection. Netflix had not publicly responded to these allegations at the time the lawsuit was filed.
