University of Hawaiʻi and UMass Forge Five-Year Research Pact on Energy Resilience and National Security
The University of Hawaiʻi (UH) and the University of Massachusetts (UMass) have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding to collaborate on research and education. The agreement, signed by UH President Wendy F. Hensel and UMass President Marty Meehan, focuses on strengthening energy systems, critical infrastructure, and national security. This partnership establishes a framework for joint research, student and faculty exchanges, and training programs. While no specific projects are immediately locked in, potential collaboration areas include cyber-physical systems, microgrids, advanced manufacturing, autonomous systems, maritime technologies, and sensing. The initiative also aims to explore research and workforce development opportunities aligned with U.S. Department of Defense priorities, with an initial emphasis on energy resilience and critical-infrastructure protection. The signing ceremony took place at Bachman Hall on the UH Mānoa campus.
