UK A-Level Examination System Grades Students from A to E, with Concerns Over Subject Withdrawals
The UK's A-level examination system grades students from A (Outstanding) to E (minimum passing grade), with a U indicating a failing grade. Recent developments indicate that the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland is withdrawing several GCSE and A-level subjects, including German, Economics, and Engineering, from its offerings by the end of the decade. This decision is based on factors such as candidate entry patterns and the long-term sustainability of these subjects. For instance, while 587 students took GCSE German in 2025, only 49 pursued it at A-level. Other subjects being withdrawn include GCSEs in Leisure Travel and Tourism, Learning for Life and Work, and Contemporary Crafts, as well as the A-level in Professional Business Services. Schools wishing to continue offering these subjects will need to do so through English or Welsh exam boards.
