Low Water Levels on Rhine River Continue to Hinder Shipping and Increase Costs
The Rhine River in Germany is experiencing low water levels despite recent rainfall, continuing to hinder shipping operations and increase transport costs. The shallow water levels, a result of this summer's heatwave and scarce rainfall, mean that cargo vessels can only sail partially loaded, leading to higher costs for cargo owners. The water level at the chokepoint of Kaub near Karlsruhe is expected to rise slightly, but more rain is needed to significantly improve conditions. The cost of transporting goods via tanker barges from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe has risen substantially, impacting the shipping of commodities such as grain, minerals, ores, coal, and oil products.
