Healthcare Leaders Urged to Maximize Telehealth Reimbursement Opportunities
Healthcare professionals, including clinicians, administrators, and telehealth directors, are being encouraged to focus on maximizing reimbursement opportunities for telehealth services. Despite challenges in the American healthcare system, there are specific services that can be billed effectively. For instance, post-operative appointments, which are typically not reimbursed due to global billing periods, can be transitioned to video visits to enhance patient satisfaction. Additionally, telestroke services have been eligible for nationwide reimbursement by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid since January 1, 2019. The SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act has also expanded telehealth opportunities by removing geographic restrictions and allowing the patient's home as a service location for substance use disorder treatments. States are increasingly mandating commercial payers to reimburse telehealth services, including those conducted from the patient's home.
