Former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang Pleads Guilty to Acting as Chinese Government Agent
Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, has pleaded guilty to charges of acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government. Wang, who was elected to the Arcadia city council in November 2022, admitted to promoting Chinese government propaganda without notifying the U.S. government, as required by law. Her activities, which took place from late 2020 to 2022, involved sharing articles favorable to Beijing on a website called U.S. News Center. Wang's fiancé at the time, Yaoning 'Mike' Sun, also pleaded guilty to the same charge and is currently serving a four-year sentence. Wang's plea agreement revealed that she and Sun worked on behalf of Chinese officials, including sharing a letter to the editor from the Chinese consul general in Los Angeles that refuted reports of human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang province. Wang is out on a $25,000 bond and faces up to 10 years in prison at her sentencing scheduled for October 6.
