Three Pacific Hurricanes: Lowell May Threaten Hawaii
The tropical Pacific is currently experiencing heightened activity with three hurricanes active in the basin. Hurricane Marie, a Category 1 storm, is expected to weaken into a tropical storm over open waters, far from California. Hurricane Karina, a Category 4 storm with peak winds of 130 mph (209 km/h), is forecast to weaken as it moves north of Hawaii without posing a threat to land. Hurricane Lowell, however, has rapidly intensified into a Category 5 storm with peak winds of 160 mph (257 km/h). Lowell is currently located south of Hilo, Hawaii, and is forecast to make a sharp turn north this weekend, potentially bringing significant impacts to Hawaii early next week. The National Hurricane Center has noted that the long-range forecast for Lowell remains uncertain, urging residents and visitors in Hawaii to monitor updates closely.
