In Ellsworth, Maine, Autumn Mowery has revitalized a candlepin bowling alley, preserving a piece of local culture and providing a community hub. Candlepin bowling, a regional pastime with thinner pins and smaller balls, has been a staple in New England. Mowery, who began working at the alley as a teenager, took over the business to prevent its closure. Despite challenges such as storm damage and the COVID-19 pandemic, she has maintained the alley as a community space, offering support to those in need, including domestic violence victims.
