Scientists Discover Massive Magma Reservoir Beneath Tuscany, Raising Questions About Dormant Volcanic Activity
Scientists have uncovered a massive magma reservoir located 15 kilometers beneath Tuscany, Italy. This discovery, led by the University of Geneva and several Italian institutions, reveals a magmatic system comparable in size to those found beneath supervolcanoes like Yellowstone. Despite the region's known geothermal activity, the size of the magma reservoir was unexpected. The study utilized seismometers to map the subsurface, revealing a vast network of magma. Unlike typical volcanoes, there are no visible signs of explosive activity, which is surprising given the amount of magma present.
